We are pleased to report that Mr D. Gilbert is now well on the road to recovery after his serious illness. The friends of Mr J. Lyons will regret to learn that he was removed to the Palmerston N. Hospital this 'morning.

The football match between Foxton and Levin tradesmen to have been played at Levin to-morrow is postponed owing to the rep. match in Palliatua. The match will probably be played next Wednesday.

The dance held in the Masonic ITall on Saturday night under the auspices of the Sports Queen, was well-attended and thoroughly enjoyed. The music was supplied by Messrs George (piano) and Graham (violin). Extras were played by Misses Arnold and Stevenson.

A property in Queen street, Auckland, with a frontage of 22ft. and a depth of 180 ft, with a twostoried brick building, was sold at auction for £14,900, equal to £670 a foot. The property is encumbered with a long lease at a low rental, which aeounts for the low price. Queen street property is valued at £I4OO a foot.

Moses, the local representative in the Maori team to tour France and Great Britain, received a telegram this morning intimating that the team would assemble in Wellington on the 191 h inst. It had been decided to give Moses a local sendoff on the date mentioned, but another date will now have to lie fixed. On Sunday afternoon a motor cyclist proceeding towards Foxton from Palmerston North was thrown from his machine as a result of a skid in loose metal on the Himatangi road. The cycle fell on the rider and pinned his leg against tne exhaust pipe) .wlrirli gave him a nasty burn before lie was extricated. ’

On Sunday morning a large volume of smoke rising from the direction of the wharf caused some apprehension among local residents, and quite a number proceeded in the direction of the river to investigate the cause of the outbreak. The fire proved to be nothing more serious than a gorse blaze on the other side of the river, however. A man was charged at the Police Court at Auckland with committing mischief by injuring a cat. The police stated that the defendant shot at the cat with an air-gun and broke its leg. The defendant stated that the cat was a nuisance, .and that he could not keep it out of his house. It was in the habit it going inside, jumping on the table, and tasting the meat and other eatables. When he caught it it had its nose inside the milk jug. “You had no right to shoot at the cat anyway,” said Mr. Poynton, S.M., in imposing a fine of £1 and costs. Advertiser has furnished bedroom with use of kitchen and din-ing-room to let.

At yesterday’s directors’ meeting of the Shannon Co-operative Dairy Co., it was decided to pay out to suppliers ltd per lb. bonus for the season and to pay 1/8 per lb. on last month’s butter fat. A number of alterations to the scale of charges in force on the New Zealand railways are set out in the “Gazette.” It is notified.that the charge for a special sleeping berth will be 20s. The charge for ordinary sleeping cars will be 12s (id, the present rate. The other charges relate to the carriage of goods.

At to-day’s meeting of the Wanganui Presbytery, held at Marton, the call to the Rev. F. McDonald from the Pahiatua charge was placed in his hands and accepted. Mr McDonald will take up his duties at the end of the month. The Rev. G. T. Brown, of St. Andrew’s Church, Pal merslon N., was appointed moderator of the Foxton charge until the vacancy is filled. Messrs Raleigh Bros., of Alfredton, have split up a totara tree on their Saunders Road farm that will take a lot of beating. The tree yielded 000 fencing posts from seven lengths. The smallest length split up into 80 posts. The top of tlie tree which probably contained another couple of lengths, had broken oil when the Iree had.fallen and had been carried away by a slip. A congregational meeting was held at the conclusion of the evening service at the Presbyterian church on Sunday when a motion was unanimously carried to the effect that the congregation place no obstacle in the way of the Rev. F. McDonald accepting the call to Pahiatua. Commissioners were appointed to present the resolution to Ihe Wanganui Presbytery which met at Marton to-day.
