FOOTBALL.
ALL BLACKS’ TOUR. The All Blacks were tendered a civic reception by the Lord Mayor at the Sydney Town Hall yesterday morning, and will commence their Australian tour with the first Test match against New South Wales on Saturday at the Sydney Show Ground. The programme for the tour is as follows: — July 10—First Test at Show Ground. July 11 (Sunday)—Motor outing. July 12—Third annual Rugby Union ball at Ambassadors. On July 22, at 5.15 p.m.> there will be an official farewell at the Town Hall, and the team will leave on July 23 by the Marama for Sydney, sailing from there on July 31, by the Narkunda.
At Pahiatua yesterday Wairarapa defeated Bush by 21 to 14. At Hawera yesterday Taranaki defeated Hawke’s Bay by 5 to 3. At Wanganui yesterday Te Aute College defeated Wanganui College by 18 to 8. The local seniors have a bye on Saturday.
The juniors meet Miranui at Miranui. The last occasion on which these two teams met, Foxton gained a decisive victory and strange to say went down by a-cricket score to Shannon whom Miranui had defeated.
The clash between the Awahou and Shannon juniors on the racecourse on Saturday should prove full of interest. Shannon appear to be specially dangerous on their own ground, but there is a feeling that Awahou will lead them a merry dance on their own light turf. Shannon possess a fast back division, which require a lot of matching. Anyhow, go<?d luck to Awahou.
In the fourth grade Shannon meet Foxton at Foxton. The local thirds will meet Shannon at Shannon.
Members of the Wanganui representative Rugby team which recently toured Hawke’s Bay and Poverty Bay assembled for the purpose of expressing their appreciation of the managership of Dr. G. J. Adams. The occasion was taken by Mr. R. Murie, on behalf of the team, to make the popular doctor the recipient of a suitably engraved cigarette ease as a token of their esteem for him. Dr. Adams suitably acknowledged the gift, and said that no one derived so much pleasure from the tour as he did. He referred to the good ■conduct of the team throughout, and considered that had they had no manager their conduct would have been just as exemplary.
Last Saturday a Wanganui resident had occasion to visit a little town in the King Country (says the Herald), and he noticed_more than usual activity. On making inquiries he ascertained that there would be a football match that afternoon, the north playing the south side of the river, and the trophy would be 30 gallons of beer. Spectators had gathered from all quarters and there were enough horses tethered in the vicinity of the playing area to form several mounted rifle corps. Needless to state, there was also great expectations among the spectators on the side lines, as to who would do the honours of the winning.
HOROWHENUA RUGBY UNION.
The weekly meeting of the Management Committee of the Horowhenua Rugby District Council was held in Levin last Tuesday evening, Mr. J. J. O’Connor presiding. Messrs Robinson, McDonald, Emmett, Casey, Procter, Austin, Hannan, Robson, Brann and Neville and Winiata were also, present. Apologies for absence were accepted from Messrs Lynch and Rimmer. Mr. W!. H. Rhodes reported having ordered off two players, J. Huff and R. Broughton, during the Wer-aroa-Foxton juniors match on Saturday. Broughton, who appeared before the Committee, is to stand down on Saturday, while Huff is suspended until he appears before the committee.
It was decided to play a MaoriPakeha junior rep. match, the date • to be decided upon later. In connection with the recent discussion relative to rep. games in the lower grades, the management committee have resolved to appoint selectors for each of the clubs therein. There will be no games on the 7th August on which date the Combined Unions meet Hawkes Bay at Palmerston.
Mr. W. Hannan was appointed
manager for the team to play Bush Union on July 14th. PRIMARY SCHOOL FOOTBALL. At a meeting of Horowhenua Primary School teachers some weeks ago a move was made to organise a Primary Schools’ Rugby Football competition. The response was most encouraging, six schools entering teams. The positions of the teams in the competition are as follows: —
