PRIZE PACKET LOTTERY.
STOREKEEPER FINED £ls. Hamilton, July 7. Harold David Caro, proprietor of the Great Bargain Store, recently conducted a surprise packet day in which he sold envelopes at Is each containing a ticket for an article in the store. A detective who purchased two envelopes drew an overcoat valued at £3, and a vase, and another detective a mirror and a pair of boot trees. To-day Caro was charged that by means of a certain device he did dispose of a gentleman’s overcoat, such coat being alloted by chance. For the defence it was contended that Caro merely followed the lead set by certain Auckland firms who held surprise packet days. The Magistrate, Mr. Walson, S.M.. said he found it difficult to reconcile the paradoxes of the law towards gambling, but the influence of gambling was so pernicious, if allowed to spread, that it inculcated laziness, and encouraged non-pro-duction, so that when rampant the authorities had taken firm action to suppress it. Besides his second conviction, the defendant would be fined £ls and costs.
