The whitebait season opened on Friday (says the Wanganui Herald), and it is expected that a good supply will reach Auckland from the Waikato shortly. Hr. Clarke MeConachv (N.Z champion) and Mr. Tom Tothill (North England champion) - will play a game of 1000 up at Mr. E. Bryant’s Billiard Saloon next Monday. The name of Mr. D. R. Ogilvy was omitted from the list of officers elected at the inaugural meeting of the Foxton Gun Club held -last Thursday night. Mr. Ogilvy was elected a vice-president. , Each day brings more and yet more patrons to the big Stocktaking Sale at the C. M. Ross Coy.’s. Bargains are like meascls, they are catching, but we feel sure that you would sooner catch some of the many bargains on offer throughout our stores.* The Power Board ball committee has its scheme of decorations well in hand. All the festoons and decorative streamers and the lighting devices are well-nigh complete, and the way is now clear for the successful functioning of the ball in the Concert Chamber iof the Levin Town Hall on Thursday night. One of the cars conveying the Levin footballers to Foxton narrowly escaped a serious accident last Saturday. Just as the car was entering the borough one of the rear wheels came off and let the car down heavily on its side. Fortunately it did not capsize, and apart from a badly bent mudguard no damage was done.
A facetious Moutoa settler inquired of'our representative this morning which hole in the Moutoa road within the borough boundary the Foxton public would select as a swimming baths'? We understand that the delay in attending to several of the borough roads has been caused through lack of metal, which, however, is now arriving. Mr. John Hopkins was in Foxton to-day, and booked an excellent ''picture “After Six Days” for screening at the Town Hall Temporary pictures on Friday, ltith inst. “After Six Days" is the story of the creation from the days of Adam and Eve to the reign of King Soloman, and is said to be an exceptionally good production.
To curb the increased numbers of deer in New Zealand and the considerable damage done by the animals to pastures and forest areas the Government has decided to remove protection on all deer, excepting moose and wapiti at the close, of the next deer-stalking season unless it can be shown by acclimatisation societies of different districts that they are ado-, quately coping with the deer menace.
Somehow smoking seems to fit, in with all moods. If a fellow is feeling hipped as the result of “backing the wrong bin,” or having a difference of opinion with his boss or anything like that, he (lies for consolation to tobacco. If, on the other hand, he had had a bit of luck —been remembered in somebody’s will, or had a “rise,” for instance —his first thought is his pipe, and he pulls it out and lights up. The great thing is to see your baccy is good and does not reek with nicotine like so many of those imported brands. It’s the nicotine that causes all the trouble. About the purest .tobaccos are those grown in New Zealand. They contain only a little nicotine —that’s why they may be smoked all the time without doing any damage to your constitution. And they are famous for flavour and fragrance. Ask your tobacconist for “Riverhead Gold,” mild, “Navy Cut” (Bulldog) medium or “Cut Plug No. 10” (Bullshead), full. You can’t go wrong with these brands. They are all toasted.*
