SENIOR MATCH.

SHANNON (16) v. FOXTON (10).

The match between the above senior teams was played on the racecourse on Saturday before a large crowd of spectators, including a number from Shannon. Foxton were without the services of Taylor, full back, whose place was taken by E. Robinson of the Awahou juniors, and Reid, the speedy local three-quarter, whose position was filled by Andrews, who though a willing forward was quite out of place in the position he was asked to fulfil. The seniors have been idle for a few weeks and in the meantime have not met for practice, with the result that there was a lack of combination in the finer points, so essential to success. Shannon, on the other hand, took the field fit and well schooled. Despite Foxton’s neglect they played surprisingly well, O’Reilly being the outstanding forward, ably backed by McDonald who harassed the reds round the scrums.* On the line out Shannon held the advantage. The Shannon backs indulged in some splendid passing bouts and their full back was as safe as a bank, and his well judged line-kick-ing was excellent. Of the Foxton backs Moses, although well-marked was able to break away and. make openings for Fuller and Procter who were splendid both in defence and attack. From the start Shannon attacked with a fine passing movement and had Foxton busy defending. A free kick to Foxton gave relief, and O’Reilly headed' a great rush which transferred play to centre. Red came back and from a scramble the ball went out to Tabu who streaked over., Hunt failed with the kick — Shannon 3, Foxton 0. Shannon again attacked and a chance to score was spoilt by bad handling, and the elusive Moses cleared. Shorty after, Robinson stopped a dangerous red rush by a good line kick. Shannon still kept Foxton busy until Fuller snapped up and evading several opponents transferred play to centre. Robinson took a mark and found the line. Hirini, Moses and Procter broke away, but Shannon came back with a fine passing movement up the yellows’ line, where a fine kick gave relief and McDonald following on, sent the ball to Procter who found the line. A further attack by reds was nullified by Robinson. From the line out McDonald and O’Reilly, broke through the neutral territory. Siddles, a Shannon player, received an injury to the eye and had to retire.. Shannon again knocked at Foxton’s door and a scrum took place in front of Foxtog’s goal, but Moses was handy and cleared. Another dangerous onslaught by the reds was spoilt by Moynihan’s off-side play. A combined Foxton rush transferred play to red territory, but Shannon were not to be denied and Robinson missing a rebound, the reds smothered, and Moynihan crossed in an easy position. Hunt made no mistake with the kick —'Shannon 8, Foxton 0. . The second half opened with a combined yellow rush, but the red backs came away, and from a scramble Tahui, the speedy threequarter, had no difficulty in getting through a defenceless opening— Hunt again registered the maximum. Shannon 13, Foxton 0. Foxton urged op by supporters set to work with a will, the forwards carrying on with great determination and Moses was nearly over. Foixton kept up )the attack a'nd McDonald snapped up and dashed over. Moses converted. Shannon 13, Foxton 5. From the kick-off Foxton initiated a forward attack and shortly after Moses secured and transferred to Fuller who beat several opponents, and crossed amidst great excitement. From a difficult angle Moses made no mistake —Shanon 13, Foxton 10. Foxton now livened up and both teams played strenuous football. Shannon worked play to within Foxton’s 25, when from a loose, Hunt took a shot at goal which the referee allowed to the surprise of those in a position to see that the ball did not cross between the posts. There was a demonstration of hooting at the decision —Shannon 1(5, Foxton 10. From this out Foxton had the upper hand and Procter made the most spectacular solo effort of the game from the centre, and was pushed out near the red

line. The play was now fast and furious, but the defence of the reds prevented a further score. The game ending Shannon 16, Foxton 10.

With the exception of one error Mr. Emmett gave satisfaction as referee. WIERAROA 21, FOXTON 3. THE JUNIOR MATCH. Weraroa met and defeated Foxton Juniors on the Racecourse on Saturday by 21 points to 3. Weraroa (White) won the toss and, from the start, commenced offensive tactics. Foxton (Yellow) returned with two deadly attacks, however, and J. Huff, fed by Procter, almost succeeded in scoring under the posts. Shortly after this Rankin’s deadly tackling saved a certain try. Whites kept up a strong offensive, however, until they registered their first score. The kick was unsuccessful. Weraroa 3, Foxton nil.

Foxton rallied and with Perreau keeping the backs fed they kept whites on the move. The Foxton backs swept down the field, the ball passing from Perreau to Procter, to J. Huff to Rankin who was forced out. A scrum followed the line out and the Foxton backs were at it again, but Hartley_ fumbled a pass from Huff. Rankin, securing almost immediately, made a brilliant dash up the line and scored on the corner. N. Huff failed to add the major points. Foxton 3, Weraroa 3.

From a line out near the Foxton line the white backs were set in action and scored near the posts. The kick was successful, Weraroa 8, Foxton 3. Foxton now attempted to even matters and Andrews forced his way almost over the line, where he lost the ball, and Scott was just beaten with a force down between the posts. Scott secured from the resulting 25 kick and made a great dash down the line and passed out to Christie who lost the hall as he fell and a force down again resulted. Play was now reversed and whites took up the offensive and were not long in crossing the yellow line. The kick failed. Weraroa 11, Foxton 3.

Weraroa still kept up the attack and Hurndell saved for Foxton with a mark. Relief was only temporary, however, and it was some time- before Foxton 'Cleared and took play back to white territory where they secured a penalty on the 25 line. J. Huff attempted a kick at goal, but the ball struck the centre bar and bounced bac-k into play. A tustle resulted under the posts, but whites cleared, half time being declared shortly aftei. On resuming play it was not long before Weraroa added another try to their score, the kick this time being successful. ,Weraroa 16, Fox : ton 3. Up and down play characterised Ihe second spell which did not prove very interesting. Hartley made an unsuccessful attempt at goal from a penalty and shortly after J. Huff made a fine run down the line, but was “grassed” by R. Broughton and two other white players, as a result of which an argument arose between Huff and Broughton and both players were ordered off the field. Weraroa added one more try, which was converted, to their score and the game ended —Weraroa 21, Foxton 3.

Mr. Rhodes had control of the game.

The teams were as follows: —

Foxton: —Hotorini, Hartley, N. and J. Huff, Graham, F. Procter, Scott, Hurndell, Perreau, Mohekey, Anderson, Andrews, Christie, Rankin and Morgan.

Weraroa: —Graham, Cole, Vincent, Broughton, Tantrum, Phillips, Broughton, Bull, Hudson, Perrin, Rippin, Kennedy, Horn Moody, Cole.

Rankin, after playing a strenuous game with the Thirds and with only a couple of minutes’ spell between matches, was called on to play for the Juniors who were one man short. Despite the fact that he had played one game, he was never found wanting, and played a great game throughout. Procter who skipped the home team showed out well as did Christie and Perreau.

The forward pack did good work with Andrews, Anderson, Morgan and Graham ever in the thick of the fray. BEBBINGTON SHIELD.
