LEVIN TRADESMEN DEFEAT FOXTON BY 23 TO 8. A match was played at Levin yesterday afternoon between teams representing Foxton and Levin tradespeople and resulted in a win for (he Levin representatives by 23 points to 8. The Foxton team consisted of several “old timers,” and others who had not kicked a ball for years, and two third grade players. They met together for the first time on the field of play and before starting were drilled in flie formation of a serum. The Levin team comprised three speedy Weraroa juniors in the three-quar-ter line and others who were more familiar with the game and in better condition for a strenuous contest than Foxton. LeVin was represented by (lie following:—Bull (Capt.), Emmett, Christensen, Rogers, Tantrum, Siddells, Wallace, Freeman, Green, Broughton, James, Pentecost, Rafferty, Do Malmanche, Truman. In the first spell Foxton had the best of the opening and got the ball out of flie scrums, and Ball, Bryant, Rankin, Procter, Williams, Hutchins, Wright, R, Hornblow and Broad kept up an attack which was too strenuous to last. Breaches of the rules gave a little, breathing time, however. Rankin from a line-out made a brilliant dash and scored first blood for Foxton, but the kick failed. Foxton kept up the attack and Levin were forced. Shortly after, Williams, by fast following up, raced the Levin full back for a touch down and was awarded a try which. Rankin converted, bringing Foxton’s score to B—nil.8 —nil. Levin followed with a try shortly after which was converted, and half time was called with Foxton leading bv 3 points. In the second spell Foxton showed lack of condition and although there were a few brilliant dashes, they could not keep pace with the fast open play of Levin and were beaten in the scrum work, owing to Hutchins retiring from the front rank to full hack. Levin piled on 18 points in the second spell without having their line crossed, thus winning by 23 points to 8. Mr. Bevnn controlled the game impartially. After the match the Levin team entertained the visitors to afternoon tea and happy speeches were made by Messrs Emmett and Hutchins. It was unanimously decided to play a return match at Foxton next Wednesday week and a final for a dinner at a later date. Those participating thoroughly enjoyed the outing. Some notes on the game will appear in next issue.
The following will represent the Fox ton Thirds against Wanderers on Saturday Taylor, Newtli, Rankin, Williams 0. Huff, Hartley, Simpson, Wright, Gupwdll, Aldridge, AVjestwood, Cunningham, Royal, Stevenson, (eapt).
