TOWN HALL.

In our last issue we stated briefly some of the features of the new Town Hall. It was pointed out in (lie circular sent to ratepayers (which appears on page 4), and we merely intend to reiterate the point, that the loan liability on the new building is made up as follows: There is .€2,400 owing on (lie old hall (omitting the sinking fund) bearing interest at 4:f per cent., this with sinking fund costs £I3S per annum. If the whole of the £OOOO asked for does happen to be required, this at G per cent will cost £360 per annum, making a total of £498. The rental return from the old hall last year amounted to £742, so there is even yet an ample margin of safety. The bogey about increasing the rates deserves to be scotched once and for all. The principal items in the Town Hall for last year accounts are set down hereunder: —

The balance £742 shown represents what the hall has returned to the Council as rent during the year. In other words a lessee would require to pay £l4 per week for the Council to be as well off. During the past four years the returns have doubled and trebled, but these figures serve admirably to demonstrate how a business can be worked to a high state of efficiency when properly handled. There is every reason to assume that given the same opportunities in the new hall these figures will ho exceeded in the future.

Wje will publish some further comments in our next issue.
