ALLEGED THEFT.
EX-TOWN CLERK CHARGED. Gore, June 8. John Francis Walsh, late town clerk of Mataura, was charged today in the Gore Magistrate’s Court with theft or conversion to his own use, between October, 1925, and March, 1926, of the sum of £2BB odd belonging to the Mataura Borough Council, also £3 15s on June 22 last. The charges were taken together. Detective Carroll said that most of the money had been repaid. Evidence was given regarding an audit, and the sums unaccounted for. It was stated that accused’s father had paid £lB4 125., leaving a balance of £43 10s. The defence was reserved, and Walsh was committed to the Supreme Court, Invercargill, for trial. He was allowed bail, self in £2OO and two sureties of £IOO.
