BOY SCOUTS.
A meeting 1 , convened by Mr. Warwick, was held in Perreau’s rooms last night to discuss the formation of a troop of Boy Scouts in Foxton. Those present were: Messrs. Perreau, Rev. Walton, Captain Stone, F. Mason, D. Christie, Hornblow, Jno. Ross, and Powell. Mr. Warwick, who presided, outlined the object of the meeting and stated that the boys were very keen to emulate the girls in the formation of a troop of Scouts. Financial assistance would be required and the formation of a committee to govern the organisation. M!r. Mason outlined the scouts’ law and the benefits to be derived by lads joining the organisation. Mr. Perreau strongly supported the movement and suggested that a shop day be organised to raise the necessary funds and that a committee be formed of those present and Mi’ G. F. Smith, and with power to add to the number, which was carried.
The Rev. Walton outlined his connection with the scout movement and urged the necessity for obtaining the services of suitable scout masters. The troop would be divided into scouts and cubs. The assistance of young men were required ns patrol leaders. Lectures on first aid and other important subjects could be introduced which would be of great benefit to the boys. He suggested that Major Sandal of Palmerston North be invited to address the boys on matters affecting the scout movement. Capt. Stone said the movement, to be a success, must have workers and should be conducted on independent lines so that all classes of the community could co-operate. The movement, having its genises in tlm school would help to make it a sucess, backed by a strong committee. He eulogised the good work done by Captain Goiffin, in a similar movement when resident in Foxton. It was decided to invite tenders for uniforms locally in order to ascertain what money would be required to meet the immediate formation.
Mr. F. Mason was appointed treasurer and other details were left in the chairman’s hands.
