NGAURUAHOE ASCENDED.
Taumarunui, June 5. The first ascent of the volcano Ngauruahoe since its activity commenced a few weeks ago, was made this afternoon by Mr. M. J. Galvin, of Taumarunui, and Mr. J. Robinson, of the Justice Department, Auckland. These venturesome climbers state that the northern lip of the crater has blown in, leaving an easy grade down into the original floor of the crater, where huge fissures are now forming. They considered that the floor must eventually fall in with a probable eruption to follow. The task of climbing the mountain was difficult, and steps had to be cut for 1500 feet. They had to make the ascent on the shady side of the mountain, owing to sulphur and smoke blowing down on the northern side. Tney describe the side as indesc-rib-ably marvellous, and the noise made by the activity within the volcano deafening and awe-inspir-ing. Blue flames, alternated with smoke and steam, issue intermittently from the mouth of the crater. Two previous attempts made reecntly by other parties to scale the volcano proved unsuccessful.
