CORRESPONDENCE.
(To The Editor). Sir, —In your last issue I see that our Borough Council, arc again going to the rate-payers for number loan of £OOOO. Now, Sir, iiir ;.lies are getting unbearable dust to show the difference between Wellington- and Foxton: Section 57!) Ilatailai Rd, unimproved value £-120, total rates £l.l 14s 3d; section Johnston street, Foxton, No. 553, unimproved value £2OO, total rates £l7 17s sd. It seems ridiculous. Wellington fir'd in the £., Foxton within a fraction of 1/3 in the £. Surely its time the ratepayers ealed a halt. On top of above, I am informed that the £SOOO loan carried some three months ago, is not included in the above rates. Now, sir, we are told that the £6OOO will lie self-support-ing. If so, its time our Mayor and Town Clerk gave the rate-payers some figures showing how it is going to be done, such, say, as the earnings of the Town Hall for the past five years and, if any, where is it? From what one hears there ought to be more than approximately £4OOO in hand. The new hall will require to show a profit of £ll 0s Od per week over and beyond all expenses to meet the interest alone, then you would require about another £3 10s per week for depreciation, etc. It is unfortunate that there are something under 500 rate-payers in the borough, and if the rates keep increasing there are not likely to be any more, as sections are unsaleable even at unimproved values. Yours etc. THOS. AY. HUNT.
