DAYLIGHT LIMITED.

REQUEST FOR ITS RETENTION. Taumarunui, May 26. Replying to a deputation regarding a continuance of the Daylight Limited express yesterday afternoon, Hon. J. G. Coates said he was loath to cut out the Daylight Limited, but the department simply must be careful of the expenditure. During the past year the department had paid off the interest out of revenue and had a balance of £25,000 or £30,000 to spare. How the department would get on this year he did not know. It was easy to dissipate a large sum if care was not taken, the fact that coal cost £1 per mile went to show how money slipped away. He admitted that the Daylight Limited was a useful train and if the department got sufficient passengers for it, it would be kept up. At present there were not suffiicent passengers to make it pay.
