RUGBY FOOTBALL .

SATURDAY’S RESULTS. Seniors: County 22, Foxton 9. Shannon 19, Wanderers 8. Weraroa defaulted to Otaki. Juniors: Foxton 13, Hui Mai 0. Weraroa 23, Awaliou 3. Shannon O', Tokomaru 0. * Miranui G, Otaki 0. Thirds: Foxton 34, Miranui 3. Kuku 21, Otaki 3. Fourths: Foxton 9, Weraroa 0. Levin D.H.S. 16, Shannon 5. COUNTY (22) v. FOXTON SENIORS. The above game was played at Levin on Saturday resulting in a win for County by 22 to 9. The Chronicle attributes the defeat to the fact that Foxton’s backs wero too light to stand up to the County’s line. Hirini ’failed with an tacked from the start, Cresswell, McDonald and Thompson, being prominent. Keriona intercepted a cross kick and raced across Countys’ line. Hirini faiiled with an easy kick —Foxton 3, County 0. Hoskings after some loose play scored for County, and which R. McDonald converted—County 5, Foxton 3. The backs on both sides were being well fed, and the game was fast and open. Keriona saved a movement by Runa and Dunn but Procter mishandling saw Foxton’s line endangered. Walls sent Fuller away on the blind side with a fine run which was t stopped by Hiwi. Foxton’s line was again invaded and an off-side movement enabled McDonald to add 3 points—County 8, Foxton 3. Shortly after, McDonald,' County’s big winger with a strong run scored in the corner and Tuna added the major points by a spectacular kick—County 13, Foxton 3. O’Reilly, Foxton’s star forward was at this stage injured and had to retire. A high punt by Keriona followed by a fast Foxton rush on Webber, who threw the ball wildly, which was gathered up by Walls who ran in unopposed. The kick, after a free charge had been granted was not allowed through too much handling—County 13, I 1 oxton 6. Shortly after opening in the second spell, a strong run by McDonald saw a splendid piece of tackling by Walls who brought the sturdy County man down on the line. The yellow forwards broke away, but McDonald managed to clear. Foxton accepted two force downs. Fuller was conspicuous time and again by splendid tackling, and yellows came down with a great rush. Keriona eluded Warren and punted high and following on got a clear run through—a tine piece of work. The kick proved a failure County 13, Foxton 9. T'oxton forwards now swooped down on attack, but the backs failed to get any advantage and Dunn, Hiwi and Palmer got away as the result of a stray Foxton pass. Tuna kicked a goal —County 1(>, Foxton 9. Short- ‘ ly after Webber shot out to Warren who fooled two Foxton backs and scored a spectacular try. The kick failed—County 1!), Foxton 9. From this Out Foxton appeared to get demoralised, and playing a man short severely handicapped them. County’s final try was scored by McDonald under the post. The kick failed, the game ending County 22 Fxton 9. Mr. H. Karauti refereed.

The Foxton seniors have been clogged with hard luck —Taylor, Reid, and Moses being out of action and on Saturday O’Reilly placed hors de combat from the first spell. It is not too late, however, for them to make up lost ground for they certainly deserve better results. FOXTON JUNIORS (13) v. HUI MAI (0). The above match was played on the racecourse on Saturday before a large number of spectators and resulted in a win for the local boys by 13 points to nil. ' Hui Mai had the advantage in weight, but lack of combination nullified this. The local team was as follows: —Hull' (2), Hussey, Mohekey, Anderson, Scott, Shaw, Robinson, Cunningham, Stevenson, Pullan, Morgan, Andrews, Hartley, Hotorini. Foxton (yellow) started with 13 men and scored their first try with this number which resulted from a loose rush in which Anderson shone out conspicuously and transferred to Hussey, who got over in a handy position. Huff added the major points. —Foxton. 5, Hui Mai nil. Shortly after the kick off Foxton rushed play into green’s tei’ritory where a force was accepted. Hui Mai came down with a combined forward movement which was stopped by a mark and a follow on by Foxton and wild kicking compelled green to accept another force. Foxton again attacked, but the passing was very faulty and wild. Stevenson was in a handy position to score, but failed to gather the oval. A scrum in front of green’s goal was followed by a free kick to greens, which got them out of an awkward position. Bevan on two occasions saved a couple of Foxton onslaughts. Faulty handling on the part of Foxton enabled green to centre the play. Huff put in a couple of runs but hung on to the ball too long. Yellows were attacking at half time. The second spell opened with the yellows attacking, but wild passing and faulty handling enabled green to transfer the play to their opponents’ 25 where Foxton accepted a force. Again greens set up an attack which was saved by Huff and Robinson and Anderson. ■Andrews got away and transferred to Huff who had a clear opening,

but lost the ball. Anderson shortly after was almost over, and greens accepted a force. A dangerous rush by greens was well stopped by Hartley. J. Huff failed with a free kick and shortly after Robinson by a smart following up secured and crossed the line, and successfully added the major points—Foxton 10, Hui Mai nil. Greens made a desparate attempt to even things up, but their advantage was only temporary. Hussey who had been playing a heady game was injured and had to retire. Hui Mai again set up a loose rush, but hard kicking spoilt their chance. Foxton kept up the attack, and greens were forced on two occasions. Scott nearly over. Shortly after Mohekey, N. Huff and Hartley got possession and the later scored. Huff took the kick, but failed. —Foxtonl3, Hui Mai nil. Green were attacking when the whistle souncWd. Mr. Anslow controlled the game.

Huff, Foxton’s wing, is the making of a first-class player, but he relies too much on bullocking methods, which are apt to cause trouble. He is a difficult man to stop, and relies too much on his shoulder, instead of side-stepping, passing and kicking. Wiith these faults rectified he would be an aquisition to any senior team. Anderson and Hussey played well. Robinson played a heady game and runs and kicks with great judgment, but must not play too' close up. Thera was far too much individual play among the locals and the passing and gathering up was extremely faulty. The team as a whole, possesses good material, but needs more combination.

Despite repeated warnings the crowd persisted in encroaching on the line and we would suggest that officials be appointed to prevent this in future games. FOXTON THIRDS (34) MIRANUI (3). 'Phe above game resulted in a cake walk for the Thirds who defeated Miranui by 34 points to 3. The visitors arrived late and had the locals so desired they could have claimed the match, but with characteristic sportsmanship, they decided to give the visitors a game. To describe the match would be a monotonous repetition of the local boys splendid combination. If'was a treat to witness both backs and forwards in action, and Mr. Cook, their coach, can take the credit for the splendid display this team gives of really classical football. Mr. D. R. Barron, the local club secretary is, players will regret to learn, confined to bis bed with sickness. A committee meeting of the local club will be held at 7 o’clock Ibis evening. A good game is anticipated next Saturday between the two local junior teams. Remarks during the progress of the game by junior players should be discountenanced and spectators should not encourage this practice. Let the captains do any talking required and the rest hold thenplace.
