RIVER HIGH.

The Manawatu River is fairly high owing to 'tire recent heavy

rains. This morning it was live feet from the top of the wharf, and last night, aided by the tide and strong westerly wind, the river flooded one of the Maori whares across the river and caused the occupants to make a hasty retreat. Today, although not so higln the water is only a few. feet from the whares opposite the wharf. The water is over the road on the Shannon side of the punt and yesterday afternoon was reported to be just over the Koputaroa Road. The Shannon punt has been out of action for a fortnight. There was a small amount of water over the Whirokino Road on the Levin side of the bridge this morning. The river is not rising however.
