BOROUGH COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING.

The usual monthly meeting of the Foxton Borough Council was held last night. Present: His Worship the Mayor (M. E. Perreau, Esq) and Crs. Adams, Walker, Parkin, Rand, Cowley, Winstanley, Woods. Thompson and McMurray. Mr. Downes (gas manager) was also in attendance. CORRESPONDENCE. was read and dealt with as follows :—i From P. J. Jack in reference to the Town Hall Committee’s refusal to pass the seats owing to the difference in the leather, offering the seats rejected at 9/9 instead of 10s 9d and stating that the balance of the order will be strictly to specification. —-The matter was given lengthy consideration after which the following motion was passed: “That Mr. Jack’s offer to supply the 123 seats already made and not passed as being in accordance with the specifications at 1/- less be declined.” From the State Fire Office re third party cover for kerbside petrol pumps. —Decided that future permits for the erection of kerbside benzine pumps be subject to third party insurance and that further enquiries be made into the amount advisable. ROAD FOREMAN’S REPORT. The road foreman reported that during the month the road staff had been engaged in the following work: —Cleaning drains, Coley, Union, Johnston and Purcell streets; carting and spreading metal Coley, Johnston and Purcell streets; cleaning water channels Main street, patching ruts in Norbiton Road and general maintenance work. Fifty yards of metal has been put on Coley Street and the remainder of the first order from Rangitikei was put on Purcell and Johnston streets. Reeve street has been ploughed and the scoop is being used to fill in the hollows prior to grading. —Adopted. The gas manager reported that during the month a good deal of trouble had been encountered with the apparatus at the works. A large number of services have been cleared during the month. A good stock of coal was on hand. The stoker made application for his annual leave. —Adopted. The poundkeeper reported that during the month seven head of stock had been impounded and driving fees to the amount of 5/collected. —Adopted. The waterworks foreman reported that during the month he had been engaged in connecting householders with the high pressure water supply, repairing meters and attending to maintenance work. The amount of water pumped during the month was 990,000 gallons, and 31 amps were used in the process. —Adopted.

It was decided that a meeting of the Town Hall Committee be held next Tuesday afternoon to receive tenders for the new Town Hall and that a special meeting of the Council be held that night to decide on a tender for the work.

The question of providing a getaway from the gas works for the amonia water was deferred, after discussion, for six months. That the residents of Whyte St. be permitted to make their own arrangements with the nightsoil contractor until such time as the sewer is laid through the street, or for so long as the nightsoil contractor is employed by the Council. It was decided that the “silent policemen” be chipped down to within two inches of the ground level.

It was decided to quit the borough gas engines now thrown out of use through the installation of electric power.

Cr. McMurray brought up the quetion of reducing the rental for benzine pumps in side streets and moved the following motion: “that the rental of benzine pumps located in side streets 100 ft. from Main street be reduced to £8 per annum, conditions in all other respects be the same as laid down.” The motion was defeated, Crs. Walker, McMurray and Thompson voting for, and the Mayor and Crs Adams, Rand, Parkin, Cowley, Winstanley and Woods against. _
