HOME-BREW WITH A “KICK.”
Wailii, May 4. Manufactures of “home-brew” were strongly in evidence at the Magistrate’s Court to-day, when they were called upon to answer charges of selling and keeping liquor for sale in contravention of the Licensing Act. _ _ Six Waihi residents were involved in the charges, and all pleaded guilty to selling, while a plea of not guilty for keeping liquor for sale was entered. Constable Dunn, of Wellington, who was specially engaged for the detection of the “home brewers,” tendered convincing evidence of the sale. The Magistrate (Mr. J. H. Salmond) convicted each of the defendants on'both charges, and imposed fines of £25 in each case, with costs totalling £B. The Government Analyst’s evidence disclosed that the home brewbeverage contained an alcoholic strength of from 4 to 94 jier cent., while ordinary commercial beer contained 7 to 8 percent, alcohol.
