KERBSIDE BENZINE PUMPS.

PERMITS TO 'BE GRANTED. The question of erection of kerbside benzine pumps was again before the Council at a special meeting on Tuesday night. In discussing the matter the Mayor said that lie thought the Council should confine the pumps to the motor trade. Cr. Walker said the number to be erected should be limited, Cr. Woods said the Council should not limit- the number of pumps. They should allow anyone to erect one as the rental would bring in a good deal of revenue. Cr. Thompson advocated a substantial rental. The Council should not allow a pump to lie erected on a corner.

Cr. Cowley objected to a heavy rental being imposed. Between £lO and £l2 per annum in his opinion, would lie a fair charge. All applicants should be granted permits. The Mayor suggested £l3 per annum or 5/- per week rental. Cr. Winstanley suggested that no permit be granted for a lesser term than .12 months. They would also have to be careful about street obstruction. The rental should lie £ls per annum. Cr. McMurray objected to applicants for permits being allowed to place their tanks under the footpaths.

A motion was moved by Crs Cowley and Winstanley that permits for (lie erection of kerbside benzine pumps be granted, the rental to be £ls per annum. Cr. Thompson was of opinion that the rental for pumps in Main St. should be higher than .that in a bye-street.

Crs McMurray and Walker supported this suggestion. Cr. Cowley opposed the suggestion on the ground that the lieeiiso fee should be uniform.

Crs Thompson and McMurray then moved the following amendment: —That licenses for erecting pumps in Main Street be £ls per annum and for any other street site, 100 feet from Main street north of Cook st. £8 per annum, subject to the regulation of the Explosives Act, and that a deposit of £5 be lodged with the Council to cover damage to the footpaths or streets.

The amendment was lost, Crs Walker, Thompson, McMurray and the Mayor voting for and Crs Woods, Cowley, Winstanley, Rand, Parkin and Adams voting against. The motion was then put and carried.
