BEACH SIDE-SCHOOL.

At last night’s school committee meeting Air. Hornblow, in referring to the side-school at the Beach, said he regretted that he jvas unable to be present at the annual meeting of householders, which was well attended by Beach residents, in order that he might clear up certain misrepresentation which had been circulated in that quarter to his attitude to the He said he had opposed the establishment of a side-school on the grounds that the Beach children could be conveyed to the main cliool, at comparatively little cost, and receive the full benefit of a well-equipped and staffed institution together with suitable environment. Aloreover children could only be taken at the side-school up to the fourth standard. When the Board decided in favour of the side-school his opposition ended. He had offered, through Mr Holben, to meet the Beach residents and explain the position to them. If, he concluded, a school was justified at the Beach then it should be a separate institution. Mr. Alsop said AD’. Hornblow had spoken to him on similar lines and stated that AD’. Hornblow’s attitude had not been understood. He said he was surprised to learn that the Board was now paying rent for the hall. Improvements had beep carried out and the Beach Improvement committee had provided locks for the outhouses. The headmaster (AD. Mason) stated that the Inspector had requested him to visit the school once a- week and he had applied to the Board for conveyance expenses, and the Board had suggested that this should come out of the sideschool capitation. The committee resolved that the headmaster’s conveyance to and from the Beach be paid out of sideschool capitation. Mr. Alsop was appointed with the chairman as visitor to the side-school and the former’s action in ordering a supply of firewood was endorsed.
