THE AWAHURI SENSATION.

SUTHERLAND GIVES HIMSELF UP. CHARGED WITH ATTEMPTED MURDER, Ernest Taniwah Sutherland, whom the police have been seeking for two months for the alleged attempted murder of his wife, Rangi Sutherland, at Awahuri, gave himself up to the Palmerston North police at a late hour on Thursday night. He expressed sorrow for what lie had done. It will be remembered that on February 11, while their house was a mass of flames, Mrs S utherland and her mother, Mrs Drummond, were attacked and injured, the former severely. A warrant was issued for Sutherland’s arrest, but he evaded capture. Senior-Detective Quirkc later received a message from Sutherland, who stated that he was at a certain address in Palmerston North, and wished to see the detective. A visit was paid to the address given, where Sutherland surrendered. He stated he was sorry for what he had done and said it was his desire /the authorities should be given no further trouble. Sutherland was taken into custody and spent the night in the lock-up at the police station. Yesterday morning he was brought before Mr. R. Edwards, J.P., at the Magistrate’s Court, where he was charged with the attempted murder of his wife.

Senior-Detective Quirke applied for accused to be remanded to appear on April 30. It was remarked that a further remand would be recjuested then. M. A. M. Ongley, who appeared on behalf of accused, raised no objection, stating lie understood the remand was required because Mrs Sutherland was unable to give evidence at the present time, and the application was granted.
