A SERIOUS CHARGE.
YOUNG MAN COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. Christchurch, April 20. Subsequent to the hearing of a charge heard in the Magistrate’s Court Yesterday afternoon against a girl of having attempted to commit suicide, a young man was arrested. He was described as the ■lover of the girl, and objections had been made by the parents to his paying attention to her. The youth, George Henry Johnson, aged 19, came before Mr. 11. A. Young, S.M., this afternoon, the charge against him being that he unlawfully supplied a woman with a certain noxious thing, knowing that it was intended to be unlawfully used to procure a miscarriage. Johnson was represented by Mr. W. F. Tracy. The girl giving evidence, said she had been keeping company with Johnson. Jlle said he would do what he could for her and procured her some pills, expressing the hope that they would make her better. She took fourteen of them on the night of April 9. She was out with Johnston and that was the night she took the bottle of poison. He gave her a second box of pills, saying that he did not think the first box would be enough. Accused had nothing whatever to do with the liquid. Detective Bavlis’s said that on April 18 he interviewed accused, who made a statement in which he admitted having purchased and given the girl certain capsules. Witness arrested accused on April 19. Johnson then said the statement made was correct, except the part stating that he knew the girl was about to become a mother. He said he was not sure. Accused was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. Mir. Tracy, in asking for bail, said the difficulties facing the two young people had been removed. The police did not object to’ bail, and the girl’s father did not offer any objection when asked. Bail was allowed in the sum of £l5O, with one surety of £l5O or two of £75 each.
