RIVER PROTECTION.
WAIMAKA RIRI LOAN PRO-
POSAL DEFEATED.
Christchurch, 14th April.
A poll on the proposal for a £200,000 loan for Waimakariri River protection was lost to-day", through failure to obtain a threefifths majority of the ratepayers. The voting was: For the loan, 3298; against, 2835.
Like most Canterbury rivers, the Waimakariri is subject to floods owing to the rapid run-off of the snow and rain-waters from the mountains. The work of confining the Waimakariri to its bed has offered a perplexing problem to the River Trust, whose existing protective works are considered insufficient owing to the rising of the bed of the river, caused by heavy deposits of shingle. The raising of the bed level is said to constitute a grave danger, not only to the farm lands in the vicinity, which have been frequently inunduated, but also to the city of Christchurch. The scheme was designed for the trust by Mr. F. C. Hay, consulting engineer, and proposed to • give security by making a straight cut in the river’s course to the sea to allow the water to get away more quickly, and increase the scour of the shingle. Tjic scheme also provided for additional protective' works on the banks. The campaigns for the loan had been vigorously conducted by the River Trust.
