AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE.
SITES INSPECTED.
The Hons. 0. J. Hawken and A. D. McLeod inspected certain properties adjacent to Palmerston yesterday.
They were taken out to different properties adjacent to the town, and the advantages offering by these properties and their suitability as sites for the college were pointed out. O. J. Hawken said that the properties inspected were quite suitable for the purpose, and mentioned in particular Batchelar’s Farm, just over the Manawatu River, which he said was quite a good place for the establishment of a college. He would not commit himself when asked if the Palmerston District held the advantage over any other facilities it had to offer for the establishment of the college. He said that nothing definite had been decided.
The Ministers proceeded to Levin and were met by Me3srs J. Linklater anil W. H. Field, M.P.’s the mayor and councillors, and members of the Chamber of Commerce, and the suitability of Weraroa as a site pointed out and its adoption strongly urged. Among the main arguments were that the Government had already a very valuable estate at Weraroa, worth something like £70,000. There were erected there a number of suitable buildings, while the quality of the soils were just such as would command itself in the matter of requirements for the agricultural institution now under consideration.
