A YOUNG WOMAN’S DEATH.
MAN CHARGED WITH KILLING
Christchurch, Yesterday.
As the result of the death of a young woman, Jessie Wilson, aged 24 years, in his blacksmith’s shop, on., the evening of March 12, Ernest Abraham Hall Archer, aged 53, was charged in the Magistrate’s Court this morning before Mi’. 11. A. Young, S.M., with killing a human being, Jessie Wilson, by an unlawful act.
The adjourned inquest on the death of Miss Wilson was continued in conjunction with the proceedings, the Coroner finding that deceased had died from heart failure, due to embolism, air having been forced into the body of deceased for an unlawful purpose.
Chief-Detective T. Gibson conducted the ease for the police and Mr. C. S. Thomas represented the accused. Dr. A. J. Orchard said that on March 12, Archer had called him by telephone at about 11 pm. and told him that a young woman bad collapsed in his shop in Bath street. Witness had gone to the shop and found a young woman, dead. He had seen accused, who was very concerned. Witness had told accused that the young woman was dead and that there was nothing for him to do but inform the authorities. Accused had said “My God!” and he had appeared very distressed. The police evidence stated that accused’s office and shop had been searched for an instrument, but none had been found. Mi*. Thomas submitted there was not the slightest evidence against accused, who was committed for trial, bail being refused.
