FOXTON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
QUARTERLY MEETING,
The quarterly meetnig of the Chamber of Commerce was held on Thursday evening, presided over by Mr. John Ross (vice-president). There were also present: the Mayor (Mr. M. Perreau) and Messrs J. K. Horn blow, F. Woods, D. R. Barron, R. McMurray, H. Osborne, D. Christie and the secretary (Mr. F Rimmer). Apologies for absence were received from the president and Mr. Cl. F. Smith.
Correspondence was read and received from the Harbour Board, in reply, deputing Messrs Barber, Chrystajl and McMurray (Board members) to confer with the Chamber re matters affecting the shipping to the port. It was resolved that a meeting be arranged on a date to be mutually agreed upon. The Postal Department, wrote stating that the Chamber’s request lor installing a stamp vending machine had been acceded to and that the machine would be placed in the lobby of the post office at an early date. —Resolved to forward a letter of thanks to the Department. A communication re Daylight Saving Bill was received from the Sports League, asking that the Chamber support the agitation.—A general discussion followed and it was finally decided, with two dissentients, to support the League in its efforts.
It was decided to support the Wanganui Chamber in re objection to clearance charge of 3d on postal packages.
A lengthy and desultory discussion took place on the reported statements made by Levin’s representative on the Foxton Harbour Board, to the Levin Chamber of Commerce at its last meeting. It was pointed out that many inaccuracies were uttered which were prejudicial to the port, and that local members of the Harbour Board be asked to correct same.
The chairman, who has had a lengthy experience in coastal shipping, referred to the difficulties which militated against a sufficient depth of water on the local bar. It was the general opinion of the meeting that if the “cuts” suggested by the Manawatu-Oroua Rivers Board were put in and training walls constructed at. the Heads to confine the outflow, that a natural scouring of the bar would take place with resultant greater depth.
The secretary reported that members had been lax in paying their annual subscriptions and funds were required to meet current liabilities. —A committee was set up to attend to this matter and to wait on business people and urge them to take an interest in the Chambers operations for the commercial welfare of the town and district.
