The growing popularity of the lottery is illustrated by the fact that the Waitotara County Council has now adopted this form of selecting victims to be prosecuted for failure to cut gorge on their road frontages. The first ballot is to be conducted this week, says the Chronicle, when a settler in each riding will be chosen. Each week prosecutions against other settlers will follow, until all road frontages have been cleared. The Pakiatua County Council refuses to pay its quota of £7U (fixed some time ago) to the Wellington committee for - the district court at the Dunedin exhibition on the ground that Pakiatua is not represented in the exhibits, it is alleged that the committee has not carried out its promise to arrange district publicity. There have been several complaints by visitors as to the poor Wairarapa representation at the exhibition and that Pakiatua is not in the picture. An accountant, whose name was suppressed, pleaded guilty at Auckland on Tuesday to a charge of attempting the theft of £2 7s from the Canterbury Jockey Club, and not guilty to a charge of attempting to obtain £2 7s by means of a valueless totalisatqr ticket. He was convicted on the first charge and ordered to pay costs. The police said the accused picked up a ticket on the racecourse and presented iti's it had been altered to make it appear that it was a winning ticket. Counsel said most people thought that a ticket picked up on a racecourse was their own property. The 1 accused had nothing to do with manipulating the ticket. . 1
