BOWLING.
nye Ferns match.
After holding the Nye Ferns against six coneseutive challengers, Barr’s rink yesterday succumbed to the rink skipped by Bryant, by a small margin after a keenly fought contest. The weather conditions were far from good, the high wind making play not only uncertain, but decidedly uncomfortable. Nevertheless good bowling was witnessed, and the result of play was somewhat in doubt until the final head had been played. The holders hopped off well, scoring a three and then a four, but for the next four heads the challengers lay, the scores then standing 7 —5 in favour of Barr (sixth head). The next happening of note occurred on the eleventh end, when Barr measured in four, leaving the totals 15 —7. Bryant now began to overhaul his opponent notching four on the thirteenth and five on the fifteenth, the totals then showing a margin of two in his favour. Another four to Bryant on the seventeenth, apparently decided the issue, as his rink pretty well maintained this lead until the finish. On the final head Barr required three to tie, but despite good attempts in a difficult position the points were not forthcoming, the challengers gaining a further point: 24 —20. Mattar, Pearson, Christie, Bryant (s) 24 v. Whibley, Smith, Roore, Barr (s) 20. The next challenge will be by a rink skipped by Huntley.
Bowlers should note that a pairs lournament will be held on the local green on Saturday and Easter Monday. The conditions of play will be much the same as on previous occasions. CHAMPION OF CTIAMPTONS. In the Champion of Champions contest to be held by Manawntu Centre, R. Roore and W. Nye will represent Foxton in the pairs (17tli inst.), and Woods, Ross, Roore, \ T ye (s) will make the team for the rinks contest (13th inst.)
Challenging bowling clubs are tenacious people, where the Kinneburgli Feathers are concerned, and Shannon is no exception (says the Levin Chronicle). They again came to Levin on Saturday but the Pyke-Inder-Bull-Sultan quartette was too good a combination, although the teams were all square at the 15th head, the green being very keen and the game a hard-fought one. With cat-like agility the Levin, men landed on their feet with a 5 on the 16th head, following this up with a “one” and a “four.” At the 21st head, Knowles, Bartholomew, Roach and Jones (the Shannon challengers) showed 12 as their score and the close of the head they had scored a further 4 points, capped by one at the final head, dosing a most interesting struggle with the result at 22—17 for the holders.
Mr. J. Suhan (Levin) won the champion of champions singles at Palmerston North again this year. Suhan is showing very consistent form, as he has also this year won the open handicap and open championship connected with his own club, and in conjunction with Foss won the Suhan medals. It will also be remembered that this player skips the rink which has defended the Kiuneburgh Feathers on so maijy occasions.
