LICENSING COMMITTEE ELECTIONS.

PALMERSTON NORTH. All five members of the old committee were re-elected on Tuesday to seats on the Palmerston North Licensing Committee. The successful candidates are —Messrs. W. R. Birnie, C. N. Clausen, W. F. Durward, A. J. Graham and J. M. Johnston. ' There were six candidates, Mr. P. T. Robinson being the unsuccessful one. Little interest was taken in the poll, but 756 votes being cast out of a total of 11,250 electors on the roll. Totals. —Birnie 626, Clausen 586, Durward 604, Graham 610, Johnston 498, Robinson 304; informal 3. AUCKLAND. Auckland, March 9. The election of the Auckland Licensing Committee, which aroused considerable interest on account of the controversy over the question of allowing an hotel in Quay Street, resulted in the return of all the members of the old committee. DUNEDIN. Dunedin, March 9. The Licensing Committee election in Dunedin City resulted in the return of four moderates and one prohibitionist —Larnach, 3198; Douglas, 3104; Mitchell, 3015; Knight, 2991; Jacobs, 2937. A full ticket was nominated by each side. In Dunedin South, all moderates were returned as follow: —Conn, 1521; Teller, 1452; Marlow, 1447; Campbell, 1446; Queleli, 1437. HUTT. Wellington, Last Night. The Hutt licensing election for five members was contested by fourteen, two tickets and an independent party of four The result of the poll returned moderate candidates, as against those understood to be opposed to the granting of an additional license for Ilutt racecourse meetings:— Returned: August 1998, Anderson 1903, Bonder 1897, Toby 1772, Power 1698.

Rejected: Udy 1653, House 1633, Stonehouse 1448, Piper 1314, were the nearest.. It is understood that Hutt meetings will now be “wet” instead of “dry.”
