CORRECTING AN ERROR.
WHEN A BODY IS FOUND.
Dunedin, Yesterday. At an inquest of Norman Bayley, a young man who was found drowned in the Y.M.C.A.dmths on Friday, a verdict of accidentally drowned was returned. The Coroner, Mr. Bundle, remarked that it was a common error that if anyone saw a body in water or banging it should be left until the polire arrived. That was absolute folly. The Coroner was commenting on the fact that when the outline of the deceased’s body came into view the custodian of the baths had seemingly made no attempt to recover it. It made no however, as the body had been in the water for over two hours; but the custodian could not have known for a certainty that it was there all that time. The Coroner also stressed the necessity for something to be done to minimise the risk of future fatalities by seeing that the premises were closed during the custodian’s absence.
