BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING.

The usual monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held last night, presided over by His Worship the Mayor (M. E. Perreau, Esq). Also present were Crs. McMurray, Thompson, Cowley, Woods, Winstaniey, Rand, Parkin, Walker and Adams. CORRESPONDECE

was read and dealt with as follows :

From the United Sports Association making application for a reduction in the rent of the Town Hall for their dance. —Left in the hands of the Clerk.

From the Foxton Silver Band, asking for subsidy.—Decided to grant a subsidy of £lO per annum. GENERAL. A petition was received from the ratepayers in Brown Street praying that the Council open and form that street from its junction with Reeve street. The road foreman was asked to report to next meeting the cost of forming Brown street from Reeve street to Union street, including fascining if necessary. C. K Woodroofe was granted an auctioneer’s license. The Town Hall Committee was authorised to obtain quotations for 400 chains, with power to accept. Decided that the road staff and water works foreman be granted two weeks leave annually.

Cr. Cowley again brought up the question of removing the old fence around the Triangle. Considerable discussion ensued, each Councillor voicing his opinion on the matter.

Cr. Cowley ‘moved, seconded by Cr. Winstaniey that the posts and chains around the Triangle be removed.

On the motion being put to the meeting it was lost on the easting vote of the Mayor. The voting was as follows: —For the motion: Crs. Cowley, Winstaniey, Rand, Woods, McMurray. Against: Mayor and Crs. Adams, Parkin, Walker, and Thompson. ROAD FOREMAN’S REPORT. During the month the road staff completed asphalting Cook Street footpath. Sand was also cleared from fhe cutting in Avenue Road, and the drift covered to prevent further trouble. The breaks in the roads and footpaths, caused by the P. & T. Department have also been repaired. Noxious weeds have been grubbed in the Cemetery, water troughs cleared "out, the road opposite the Town Hall graded for a parking site for cars and general maintenance work carried out. It is proposed to give Clyde Street a top dressing of tar and grit and to asphalt the portion used as a taxi stand. Metal is needed for this work h o'wever. —A d opted. GAS WORKS. .JANUARY WORKING. 'flic amount of gas manufactured during the month of January was 380,400 ft., which with the amount in (he holder on December Ist 18,200 feet, made a total of 398,600 feet. During the months, 331,700 feet were used by the consumers, 25,500 at the works and there were 13,400 feet left in the holder on January Ist making a total of 370,600 feet, and leaving 2,800 feet representing 7 per cent, unaccounted for. Thirty three tons of coal have been carbonised during the month, producing 11,388 cubic feet to the ton, and producing 6 tons 18 cwt. of coke. Payments for the month totalled £230 17s lOd and were made up as follows: —Coal £B2 15s Od, salaries and wages £4O 14s Od, fittings £7 19s 9d, working expenses £3 11s lid, engine repairs and oil £4 8s Od, repairs £3 3s 2d, cartage and freight £7 9s 4d, ’phone £3, power board £1 13s 9d, interest and Sinking Fund £59 11s Bd. Receipts for the month totalled £255 19s 3d, and were made up as follows:— Gas sales, lighting £4l 2s lid, heat and power £99 2s 2d, coke sales £33 Is lOd, tar sales £lO 3s Od, fittings £22 0s lOd, miscellaneous £3O 8s 6d. GAS MANAGER’S REPORT. ■S& The gas manager reported that during the month the apparatus at the works had worked satisfactorily. During the month a good deal of outside work had been done and two services had been found badly corroded and leaking. One new cooker was also installed. The demand for coke has been good and there is a plentiful supply of coal on hand. The manager also requested that he be granted his annual leave in March. —Adopted.
