MOTOR CAR CRASHES INTO TRAIN.

FOUR PEOPLE INJURED,

Invercargill, February 22.

Five residents of Birckwood, near Nightcaps, had a miraculous escape from death on Saturday morning, when a car in which they were touring crashed into 'the Luns-den-Kingston train at the Parama crossing.

It appears the party was partly obscured by tall poplars at this point, and a gale blowing at the time prevented tlie engine whistle from being heard. Cecil Harris Robertson, driver of the car, was thrown through the windscreen and sustained severe facial injuries; Allan Ballantyne, a broken collarbone; J. Parcy, four ribs broken; John McGill, three ribs broken; Alexander Ballantyne, uninjured.

The party were attended to by a doctor at Lumsden and its members later removed to Southland Hospital where Robertson was operated on.

The men were on their way to the New Zealand and South Seas’ Exhibition at Dunedin when the smash occurred.
