HERD-TESTING
A meeting of No. 4 group of the Rangiolu Herd Testing Association, of which Mr. W, 11. Gimblett is president, was held at Foxton on Saturday evening. Mr. W. E. Barber was in the chair and others present were Messrs. Ross, Austin, Hughes, Speirs, Fletcher, Brown and Richmond.
A progress report of the season’s work up to the present showed a quite satisfactory financial state, and that it was very evident that a greater amount of interest in herdtesting was being taken locally. It was mentioned that a meeting in collection with herd-testing would be held by the Manawatu branch of the Dairy Farmers’ Union at an early date. It was decided that three delegates from the No. 4 group attend, viz., Messrs. W. E. Barber, F. Woods and E. Austin. Mr. Ross suggested that there should be a cull cow drive held in connection with the association. It was intimated that this matter would be discussed at the forthcoming meeting.
The secretary reported receiving a letter from the Minister of Agriculture in reply to a communication stating that the association did not seek any subsidy for "herd-testing. The letter noted with pleasure the association’s desire that the money be spent on the research work now being carried on at Wallaeeville. The secretary also reported that an offer had been made for a departmental officer to give a lecture on the results of disease research in connection with dairy cows, up to the present time in New Zealand, and particularly in regard to mammitis, which is prevalent to a certain extent.
