UNITED SPORTS ASSOCIATION.

SPORTS MEETING ABANDONED.

A special meeting of the United Sports Association was held in the Racing Club’s office on Thursday evening to consider the entries received for the sports meeting and to go into the question as of the advisability or otherwise of holding the meeting. The meeting was presided over by Mr. W. E. Barber, as chairman. Also present were Messrs. 11. /Hutchins, S. Barber, M. E. Perreau, E. Parkin, C. A. Pearson, S. Austin, D. R. Barron, R. Bryant, D. Christie and the secretary (Mr. F. Rimrner). The entries received for the athletic chopping and sawing events were very disappointing and after discussion Mr. R. Bryant moved that the sports be abandoned. This was seconded by Mr. Austin. Messrs. Hutchins and Barber moved an amendment to the effect that the sports be held and Jhat the athletic, chopipng and sawing events be cancelled. Mr. Hutchins said he did not think they should cancel the sports altogether. The horse events were good and he knew of eleven Levin horsemen who were coming over for the meeting.

. After further discussion, the amendment was put and lost and it was decided that the sports be not held and the secretary was instructed to write to this effect.

The fact that the local state school picnic is to be held at Ashhurst on the Wednesday previous to the meeting and that the Flaxmill Workers’ annual picnic is to be held at that place on the same day as the sports were factors in the cancelling of the meeting. It was also considered that the West Coast Championship at Wanganui on the same day had also attracted a number of patrons who would otherwise have visited Foxton.

The chairman spoke strongly on the local events clashing with the sports fixture and said that as the shops would he closing all day for the school picnic they could hradly expect them to close on the Saturday as well.
