FATAL ACCIDENT.
CAR CAPSIZES
Auckland, February 14,
A fatal accident, which occurred near the approach to the Muriwai Beach at about four o’clock yesterday afternoon, marred the day’s gathering for the motor races. A five-seater motor-ear driven by a young man named A. N. Wells, of Ilemuera, capsized in the soft sand. It appears that the car, which contained R. W. McLellan, of A. S. Paterson and Co.’s office, A. F. Henry, of the Battery Supply Co., James D. Walsh, of Ponsonby, and A. J. Nutter, of Remuera, was going down the beach towards the road leading from it, when it had to swerve sharply to avoid another car in front. The car turned over quickly, throwing the occupants out, and then righted itself. Three of the party were seriously injured, and Dr. E. R. Abernethy, who happened to be on the beach, and a number of St. John Ambulance workers, left the races for the scene of the accident. Dr. Abernethy found that McLellan was dead. The other two who were injured were Henry and Walsh, who are both suffering from broken limbs and injuries to their backs. The others escaped uninjured. The injured men were sent to the Auckland Hospital.
The accident was in no way connected with the racing programme. The injured men were progressing favourably to-day.
