BIRTH CONTROL
ATTEMPTED LEGISLATION DEFEATED.
London, February 10.
In the House of Commons Mi'. Thurtle’s motion for leave to introduce a bill empowering local authorities to impart birth control knowledge to poor women, on the grounds that it sliuld not be limited to the well-to-do section, was rejected by 167 to 81. The Labourite, Rev. Barr, warmly condemned Mr. Thurtle’s bill as a national policy of birth control propaganda. He declared that “A liberal and beautiful Creator has provided ample resources for everyone, so long as there is wise production and just distribution. Moral instincts, or religous prejudices—if you prefer the term —are the most potent influences in uplifting mankind. They ai’e as sure a guide as science itself. It they are defied it will be at the peril of the State.” He cited the Liverpool Labour Conference’s refusal to make birth control a political issue.
