MOTORIST KILLED.

CAR DASHES AGAINST CAR. Auckland, February 6. At Oiiehunga, about midnight, a tramcar proceeding to the terminus in rounding a bend, collided head on with a motor-car driven by Leonard Charles Vincent, jun. Vincent got the full force of the impact, and his death must have been practically instantaneous. One side of the motor-car was stripped off, and the front badly battered. The front of the tram was slightly damaged. Frank Lovelock, the only other occupant of the motor-car, was thrown out, but was not injured. He was subsequently arrested. The tram motorman states that his vehicle was moving slowly. The motor-car swung round., the corner at a fast pace, and crashed into the front of the tram, which had almost stopped. PASSENGER FINED FOR DRUNKENESS. Auckland, February 7. Lovelock was charged in the Onehunga Police Court with drunkenness. Sergeant Criuckshank said that the police had found defendant drunk on Friday night, and later learned that he had been concerned in the motor smash. Lovelock told the Court that at about 9 o’clock on Friday night, Vincent, whom he knew only by sight, asked him to go for a drive in a motor-car. They started from Victoria Street, in the city, and Vincent said that they might go as far as Papakura. When defendant got in the car, he found some drink, and they both had some “spots. He remembered being thrown from the car when the accident occurred, but could remember no more. Ho was a barman by occupation, but at present was out of work. Lovelock, who had a deep cut on the right side of his face, gave his address as 10 Domain Road, Auckland. He was convicted and fined 10s. on the charge of drunkeness. INQUEST OPENED. The inquest touching the death of Leonard Charles Vincent was opened before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M. The evidence of identification showed that deceased was a single man and would have been 21 years of age next month. He was a mo-tor-tractor driver, employed by the Avondale Borough Council. The inquest was adjourned sine die.
