A GRAVE CHARGE.

AGAINST YOUNG MARRIED MAN.

Auckland, February 8.

An echo of the O’Shaughncssey trial was heard in the Supreme Court this morning, when Richard Pearson Hammond was charged before His Honour Mr. Justice Stringer, with carnally knowing a girl under the age of 1.6, and further with unlawfully using an instrument. Accused pleaded not guilty to the first charge and guilty to the second.

The Crown Prosecutor (Mi’. Meredith) said lie would accept the pleas. Mr. Moody stated' that accused was 21 years of age, a married man with two ■children, the youngest of whom was 2 years and a half of age. Accused’s wife had been away for some time, and he had got into the company of the girl. His wife was prepared to forgive him and take him back. Accused had made a full 'confession to the police.

His Honour stated the ease was not one that called for probation, but he would have a report from the probation officer. Accused would be remanded for sentence until Wednesday.
