Gangs of men are employed in the Manawatu Gorge removing slips which came down last winter. The rocks and earth are being cleared to the full width of the road, 31ft. The engineer, Mr S. Jickell, informed us that the continuous soaking rains of last season were responsible for more slips in the Gorge than for ten years previously.

On Wednesday aflernonn-. lasi Mrs Austin-Joliiiston and her daughter, gave a “kitchen tea" for Miss Kathleen Barber in honour of her approaching marriage. A very pleasant afternoon was spent by all present, a “golf croquet" .competition being won by Mrs Ifealey. The guest of honour received a : collection of very useful gifts.

The senior inspector of schools for Wkmganui District (Mr. F. G. A. Stuckey M.A.) visited Foxton this morning for the purpose of interviewing local candidates for probationer, ships in the primary schools under his jurisdiction. He also conferred with the headmaster of the local school on matters pertaining to the opening of the Foxton District High School. While examining a popular make of ear the other morning, a Ilawera motor mechanic noticed that the feed pipe from the benzine tank to the carburetter was rubbing against the exhaust pipe. A closer examination revealed that the brass feed pipe had been so worn by friction and heat that benzine was slowlyseeping through tin 1 opening (states the “Star"). Had this been allowed to continue a serious explosion would probably have occurred at some time when the exhaust pipe was hot. Owners of the type of cars where the feed pipe runs close to the exhaust should profit by this experience.

Next Sunday week, February 7th, the All Saints’ Sunday School will be re-opened under the Superintendancy of Mr. F. A. Mason. It is hoped that a good muster of children will be present. As this year is the Jublice of the All Saints’ Church it is intended that the children shall lake an important part in the Festival Week which is to be held. The. Parishoners are to lie called together at a later date to make arrangements for various events to take place. It is hoped to compile a histoy of the Parish and publish it in book form. This Parish is older than either Palmerston North or Feilding, and some of the' records form very interesting reading.

Mr R, Bryant had a fortunate escape from a serious injury on Thursday night. On returning home at about 10.30 p.m. and noticing that it was was likely to rain during the night, Mr, Bryant went into the yard at the rear of his residence

to put a motor delivery van in the garage. The vehicle had just undergone an overhaul that day and on cranking the engine, the van knocked Mr. Bryant down and careering over a pile of fire wood, nosedived into the Awahou drain. Fortunately Mr Bryant was not seriously injured, but suffered a severe shaking and minor abrasions. The van was not badly damaged and was towed out of the drain by a lorry.

For the weary there are worse ways of spending a welcome “night off” than by the fireside, with pipe and book for com-

pany. But the tobacco for such occasions should be a brand that; can be smoked with enjoyment for three or four hours at a stretch without burning the tongue or other unpleasant consei|uences: where is such tobacco to be found? Why right here in New Zealand. And it owes its excellence to two things, principally. Firstly, it contains only a minimum amount of nicotine, and secondly it is toasted in the process of manufacture. That's why the llavour is so good. In these two important respects it differs altogether from the imported brands' which often contain as much as five or six per cent of nicotine, and ae not toasted. For purity, delicacy, flavour aroma, and wholesomeness, New Zealand tobaccos

are unrivalled. If you like a mild aromatic smoke try Riverhead Gold; if you prefer a medium strength there is Navy Cut (Bulldog) and if you are accustomed to a full-llavoured brand ask for Cut No. 10 (Bull’s Head).*
