The next quarterly sittings of the Supreme Court in Palmerston are set down to commence on February 2. The list of cases for hearing is comparatively small, a satisfactory feature being the absence of crime in the district. At the last two sessions of the Court the Judge presiding has commented in each case on the absence of serious crime, and this session’s list so far has neither criminal cases for trial nor prisoners for sentence. The cases set down include only civil and divorce fixtures, in addition to a number of applications for discharge in bankruptcy.

We are informed Hint many years ago the Maoris periodically eauglil large hauls of - lisli a I a spol in I lie ocean about a mile and a half north of the mouth of the river and a few chains from the shore. Tl has been thought that a reef existed in the locality. Local fishermen have tried many times to locate the supposed reef hut without success. New motor-cars are selling in Auckland at the rate of .over 50 a week. Although statistics covering the last month are not available it is considered that the figures will establish a record and reveal sales averaging quite ten ears a day (states the “New Zealand Herald”). Dealers are all experiencing a very brisk demand, and not a few have customers waiting for deliveries. In anticipation of heavy sales for December and January many agents had booked large stocks. In some cases they ha.ve not sufficient cars left for their showroom displays. It is not anticipated that the present record sales will continue for many weeks, sjnee the potential car purchaser usually makes up his mind early in the summer in order to obtain the benefits of fine weather for several months. Records of car sales in Auckland since April, 1925, reveal that there has been a steady increase each month. In April last 137 cars were sold in Auckland City, 'flic sales for October totalled 228, an increase of nearly 70 per cent, in six months^

The Canadian Commissioner of Agriculture told a new egg story at a Canadian dinner. A bachelor found on his Sunday egg a neatly worded message: ‘‘l am Hattie Simpson, 18 years old, fair-haired, blue-eyed, amiable; prepared io marry eligible suitor.” She added her address. The bachelor rushed out and cabled a proposal. In due course he received this reply: “Yon are too Into. T was married three years ago, and have two children."

At the last meeting of the Foxton Harbour Board Mr. Chrysiall referred to the storage and distribution of benzine which would now obviate the necessity of sending cargoes of same through the local port. Mr. Die Murray replied that Foxton had lost the opportunity of being made a distributing centre, as the Borough Council, of which Mr. Chrystall was the Mayor, refused the Vacuum Oil Co. the right ol erect a building as a distributing depot.

Another development has occurred through the position created by the Audit Department’s “tag” to the Dannevirke Power Board’s bal-ance-sheet. Mr. J. W. Ellinghani, chairman of the Dannevirke County Council, and county representative on the board whose position was questioned under circumstances previously explained, has resigned the chairmanship of the County Council in consequence of the “tag” affecting him, but is seeking reelection

A launch party at Bluff had an exciting time with sharks while fishing for cod a few nights ago. They had been at work only a few minutes when suddenly one of the party found a shark on his line. Before it occurred to another member to put a shark hook on his, four sharks had been on the lines but had managed to escape after having been dragged as far as the side of the boat. Finally one of the sea tigers was hooked and after an exciting struggle was brought alongside the launch and hit on the head with a spanner. When the party landed the shark, which was sft. 6in. in length, it was opened, and found to contain three flounders and a trout 18in. long.

Two children, Cecily Lay, aged 10, years and Elizabeth Alice McLean, aged 13, were drowned in tragic circumstances in the Wanganui river yesterday. A Jind of a nugget of gold, weighing 'do/., !)dw(., by Mi - . Rasmussen, is reported from Ihe Moonlight distriot (says the Marlborough Press). The gold is a very rugged piece, nearly two inches in length, and oval in shape. A piece of richlooking quartz carrying visible gold was also discovered by Mr. Rasmussen in the same locality. The Moonlight district lias been Ihe loealion in past years of the discovery of many valuable nuggets. Two gold-diggers, over a quarter of a century ago, unearthed one of the richest pieces of gold ever found on Ihe West Coast, in the same locality. The theory of experts is that the nuggets have become detached from a rich quartz reef, but where Ihe reef is located is still one of the many mysteries associated with the hidden treasure which remain to be solved.

.Sherlock Holmes, the famous detective of fiction, smoked strong black shag tobacco and derived inspiration from it when puzzling over some problem of more than ordinary complexity. Shag is too I’nllllnvoured for many smokers. It. contains a lot of nicotine, and excess of nicotine is a bad thing. The habitual use of such tobacco is bound sooner or later to affect the consumer injuriously. Unfortunately practically all imported tobaccos are heavily charged with nicotine. And in that respect they differ essentially from our New Zeeland grown tobaccos, Ihe comparatively small amount of nicotine which constitutes one of their chief recommendations. Also —and this is important —they are all toasted, and toasting brings out the flavour of the leaf in a most remarkable way. There are several brands of this popular tobacco. Riverhead Gold mild, Navy Cut (Bulldog label) medium and Cut Plug No. 10 (Bull’s Head) full strength. Each of them has its merits. That seasoned smoker, Sherlock Holmes, would doubtlessly prefer the last named.*

A well-known farmer in the Tokarahi district has in his flock a freak of nature in the form of a land) possessing seven legs (says the “North Otago Times”). The animal is quite strong and healthy.
