SOCIAL AND PRESENTATION.
TO MIL AND MRS. J. D. AITKEN,
There was a representative gatheripg in the Moutoa Hall on Tuesday evening to bid farewell to Mr. and Mrs J. D. Aitken prior to their departure for Wangaehu, where Mr. Aitken has been transferred as head teacher of the school in that locality. Among- those present were friends from Foxton. The function was arranged by the Moutoa School Committee. Mr Duncan Gilbert occupied the chair and referred, with regret, to the departure of the guests. He stated that the life of a country schoolmaster was not altogether a “bed of roses,” but Mr. Aitken by his courteous manner had won the esteem and respect of children, parents and residents. Mr. and Mrs Aitken had taken a keen interest in the social life of the settlers and the erection of the hall was in large measure due to Mr. Aitkcn’s efforts. He wisher Mr and Mrs Aitken God-speed, health and happiness in their new, home and activities. On behalf of the Mouloa residents he asked the guests to accept a cash gift as a token of esteem (applause).
Mr. and Mrs Aitken in accepting the gift were heartily received. Mr. Aitken thanked the donors for the gift and the kind sentiments expressed. He said he would never forget the kindness of the Moutoa people during the period of hisy daughter’s illness. So far as his school work was concerned, he had only done his duty and from a social point of .view he had shared their enjoyment. In concluding he wished the school and settlers prosperity and happiness. Those present then joined in singing “For they are jolly good fellows” followed by cheers.
During the evening vocal and instrumental items were contributed, and dancing was indulged in.
Mr. and Mrs Aitken left for Wangaehu yesterday.
