COST OF FLOOD CONTROL
COMMISSION TO DECIDE WHO SHALL PAY?
A further step in the advancement of the gigantic scheme for the controlling of the flood waters of the Manawatu and Oroua rivers has been decided upon —the apportioning of the cost of the undertaking among the various local authorities which will derive benefit from the scheme (says the M.D. Times). The Board applied for a Commission to be set up to investigate the matter and the Governor-General has authorised this procedure. The personnel of the Commission has not been disclosed, but the names will be known shortly. The Manawatu-Oroua River Board decided at last week’s meeting to submit the following local authorities to the Commission, which will decide whether or not they shall contribute towards the scheme: — Sub-divisions: Kairanga, Makerua, Moutoa, Kopnturoa and Oroua. Drainage Boards: Moutoa, Makerua, Manawatu, Sluggish River and Buckley. County Councils: Manawatu, Horowhenua and Kairanga. Borough Councils: Palmerston North, Shannon and Foxton. The Foxton Harbur Board will also be included.
