An examination revealed that three carriages had left t lie rails, and had rather hadl.v torn up the track. The mishap occurred on what is known as the Pukerua Embankment

The carriages affected were the fifth sixth and seventh from the engine. The two first carriages were completely derailed, while Ihe front wheels of the hack third carriage only had left (he track.

The passengers were transhipped lo the forward carriages, and what was left of the train continued its journey to Wellington, Thoriulon Station being reached at 12.30, exactly an hour and twenty minutes behind schedule time.

No one was injured by the mishap, although the passengers in the three carriages derailed received a good shaking. The first of the derailed carriages was rather badly damaged, but more damage was done to the other carriages when lifted back on to the line again with the cranes and jacks than was occasioned by the accident itself.
