MISHAP TO DAYLIGHT LIMITED.
BROKEN AXLE CAUSES DERAILMENT. PASSENGERS ESCAPE INJURY
Through the braking of an axle, three first-class carriages nil the daylight Limited express train from Auckland were derailed about 10.34 o'clock on Saturday night when the train was between Plimmerton and Pukerua Bay. Th(‘ first intimation of the accident was when a jolting and bumping sensation was experienced by passengers in the ' carriages concerned. Those in charge of the train discovered in good time that something was amiss, and the train was promptly pulled up. An examination revealed that three carriages had left t lie rails, and had rather hadl.v torn up the track. The mishap occurred on what is known as the Pukerua Embankment
The carriages affected were the fifth sixth and seventh from the engine. The two first carriages were completely derailed, while Ihe front wheels of the hack third carriage only had left (he track.
The passengers were transhipped lo the forward carriages, and what was left of the train continued its journey to Wellington, Thoriulon Station being reached at 12.30, exactly an hour and twenty minutes behind schedule time.
No one was injured by the mishap, although the passengers in the three carriages derailed received a good shaking. The first of the derailed carriages was rather badly damaged, but more damage was done to the other carriages when lifted back on to the line again with the cranes and jacks than was occasioned by the accident itself. The Daylight Limited on Saturday consisted of eight cars.
