FOXTON RETAINS NEWMAN CUP.
BULLS AND FOXTON PLAY DOUBLE DRAW.
The local team journeyed to Bulls on Saturday and played a match with the Bulls Club for the Newman Cup. The conclusion of the match was most exciting. When the last set went on Bulls were leadng by. one set and three games, and as the conditions laid down specify that in the event of ah even number of sets, games arc to be counted, the Foxton team had not only to win the set, but had to win by three games to make the matcli a draw.
At the commencement of the set both sides played very carefully, winning game and game about until lie Bulls players, the Rev. Jones and .1. Holmes led by 5-4, and il seemed a foregone conclusion that they must win the required number of games, even if they did not win the set; but the Foxton pair, Newton and R. MeMurray junr. fought stubbornly for every point, and brought the games even and then led 0-5. Bulls took the next game and then( only required one more game to win the match, with Holmes serving, who had not so far lost on his service but good combination by his opponents won (he game for Foxton. Then Newton made no mistake with liis service, making the set Si-0; and the match a draw. Foxton being the holders of the cup thus retain it.
