SEQUEL TO MOTOR COLLISION
Charged with driving a motor car in a manner dangerous to the public at Bangiotu on December G, William Geoige Bcnning pleaded not guilty at the Palmerston S.M. Court yesterday, before Mr. Stout, S.M. Robert Hall, driver of the Eox-ton-Palmeiston North char-a-banc, gave evidence that on the date under review, when reaching the Rangiotu bridge, he saw a motor car approaching from the opposite direction. Witness was well on to the bridge when the other car, after appearing to pull up at the approach, continued its journey and came on to the bridge with the result that a collision occurred. Witness had gone about 50 feet on the bridge and at the time of the impact was practically at a standstill.
Frederick Penny, railway shunter, who was a passenger on the bus, gave corroborative evidence. Defendant stated that he considered he was first on the bridge and so had the right-of-way. When the impact occurred he was almost at a standstill, having applied his foot brake and turned off the benzine. The vehicles met head on and had the bus been on the propel 1 side, witness’s car would only have been damaged on the side. The Magistrate said that defendant was to blame for the mishap and imposed a fine of £5, with costs amounting to £1 IS/-.
