WOMEN SCHOOL INSPECTORS
APPOINTMENT TO BE MADE,
The Minister of Education (Sir James Parr) announced yesterday that in accordance with a promise made last year to the Women Teachers’ Association that when a vacancy occui'red on the primary schools inspectorate, an opportunity would be given for the appointment of a woman teacher, the Government, had decided, as a matter of policy, to give women a chance to show what they could do as inspectors. As over two-thirds of the teachers in the N.Z. primary schools were women, it seemed only fair that the women should have a chance to prove their ability in the higher positions. The next vacancy for an inspector would be shortly advertised by the Public Service Commissioner, and applications would be confined to women, in all parts of the Dominion, so that the position could be tilled in that manner. The Minister added that there were two vacancies for high school inspectors —new officers which were just being created —and one of them would be given to a woman.
