ROAD ACCESS TO THE BEACH
DEPUTATION WAITS ON COUNTY COUNCIL.
At Tuesday’s meeting of the Manawatu County Council, Messrs. J. Binkla ter M.P. and J. Nairn, representing the Beach residents, waited upon the Council in respect to improved access to the Beach. At present the road leads to the river foreshore through a sand drift, and at high tide is practically impassable. The Harbour Board formed a. road leading to what is known as the sanitarium, which, if metalled, would provide quicker and safer means of transport.
Mr. Nairn said that a number of residents now lived permanently at the beach, and as the present entrance was subject to inundation at high tides, it had been considered highly desirable that the road should be completed. The people did not ask that the whole county be levied to meet the cost, but that a loan be raised and the residents at the Beach rated accordingly. It ns estimated that it would require some £3OO to £SOO to carry out the scheme.
Mr. .). Linklater, M.P. who was also present, mentioned that the Paxton Harbour Board had formed ami clayed the route and merely asked that it be metalled and kept in order.
Cr. Barber was of the opinion I hat the route in question should be the main entrance to the beach, but after all, from the council’s point of view it was a matter of money. He had reason to believe that, in any case, it was not a county road, being within the boundaries of the Harbour Board and had never been dedicated to the county.
Mr. Linklater: That can be easily rectified.
A suggestion was put forward that Mr. Linklater interview the Main Highways Board on the matter and that gentleman said lie would ascertain what could be done.
