BOROUGH COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING.
The first meeting of the year of the Foxton Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers last night, presided over by the Mayor (M. E. Per reau Esq.) Also present were Crs McMurray, Woods, S. E. Cowley, T. W. Winstanley, C. Rand, E. Parkin, M. H. Walker, and Thompson. ROAD FOREMAN’S REPORT. During the month the road stac has been engaged in top-dressing the tar sealed portions of Johnston and Russell f-ueets. These have been completed and the tar sealing has been conFaued along Russell street up to the entrance of Victoria Park. The remainder of the \ inch metal in the yard has been mixed and there is just abo 't sufficient to complete Cook Street footpath. This work is now being carried out. The speed limit board in Union Street has also been replaced and general maintenance carried on.
The new tar sealing at the end of northern end of Russel! St. proved rather more expensive than usual owing to the surface being a good deal warn and having to be built up on the sides of the road. Also as the distance from the yard increases the hauling cost is greater The cemetery grass has been mown. Or. Walker brought up the question of repairs to Coley St,, but it was decided that nothing could be done in this direction until the end of the financial year. Cr. Cowley reported that the wind was pausing a sand drift at. the cemetery cutting. It was decided to draw the foreman’s attention to the above matter and the report was adopted. WATER WORKS REPORT. During the past month the following works have been carried out by the waterworks staff: —Connecting four householders with the high pressure water supply and all maintenance work in connection with the. water and drainage. Pumping Station. —During the month 1,250,000 gallons of water was pumped. The maximum current used was 32.5 amps. It was decided that the balance of the sewerage work be commenced ced on January 25th. CORRESPONDENCE was read and dealtli with as follows: — From All Saints’ Vestry in answer to a letter from the Council, that they are prepared to trim trees along their road boundary, but stating that they could not do anything to prevent tree roots cropping out in the footpath. —Left in the hands of the Town Clerk to take action.
From the Highways Transport Co., Palmerston North, enclosing claim for expenses incurred to one of the Company’s motor lorries through going through one of the borough sewers. The claim amounted to £4 12s fid. Decided that the Council cannot admit any claim.
A copy of the order paper re the .Municipal Confei-ence was received rind it was decided that the clerk (Mr. Wm. Trueman )represent the Council at the conference; to be held in Dunedin on sth February.
GENERAL.
The Public Works Committee recommended the holding in abeyance the question of purchase of a road drag.—Adopted. The Works Committee submitted a lengthy circular for approval and recommended that a copy be sent •.o ratepayers in connection with the forthcoming poll for road and footpath improvements. After persual and minor alterations it was decided to adopt the circular. The Town Hall caretaker was granted leave of absence from February 25 to March 9.
