Tin* police have issued the usual warning to the public about the discharging of fireworks in public places on Christmas Eve. It is the intention to prosecute offenders as was done in several instances on last November 5.
In connection with the privileges for the forthcoming meeting of the Foxtou Racing Club, Mr. J. Walls was the successful tenderer for the catering, and Mr. 11. A. Mitchell, of Kimbolton, again secured the publican’s booth.
Mr. Davis who is representing the ■War Record Department” of the United Distributers Ltd., \\ ellinjgton, is at present canvassing the whole of the Foxton district. This Department is run entirely liv disabled soldiers, and which has been thoroughly investigated by the Executive of New Zealand R.S.A. This training is for men of good standing who are unable to carry out their previous occupations, and serves as a training not only for the ‘‘United Distributers” organisations, but any other commercial institutions throughout the country.
Among the aspirants for the office of clerk to the liauraki Plains County Council (states an exchange) was a southern applicant, who set out his qualifications in a 17-page brochure, neatly hound with green ribbon, and containing copies of testimonials and certificates plentifully embellished with scroll work. One from a master mariner drew a remark that he would be a splendid man for the council’s punt. There was an applicant who claimed experience in the control of Plunket societies. The third son of a knight and an exarmv major applied.
At the supper given to the. Shannon councillors by iho Mayor last week the Town Clerk (MV. .1. T. Bovis) said it was not generally recognised how marked had been the progress made by Shannon since the formation of the Borough in 1917. While it was obvious that the town eould not claim to he up-to-date in all particulars, for instance, the absence of sewerage, permanent surfacing of highways and footwith the necessary channelling provision, yet strides have been made along the road of sound progress. In 1918 the capital value of the Borough stood at €l2-1,025; at March 91st, 1925, the capital value had increased to .€l9-1,055, an increase in seven years of £70,000. For nine months of this year tiermils have been issued for new buildings to the value of £4OOO.
