Manawatu Herald TUESDAY, DECEMBER 22, 1925. DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL.
AFTER considerable local agitation the Education Department has sanctioned the establishment of a local District High School, which will come into operation on February next. To provide necessary accommodation (the school at present being taxed to its limit) the Anglican and Presbyterian schools will be tenanted. This, of course, is only a temporary arrangement which, however, will result in a certain amount of inconvenience to pupils and staff. The Department will not, however, sanction the expenditure of •money for increased accommodation until satisfied that local attendance for secondary education justifies the demand. The permanent establishment of a department for secondary education will, therefore, depend upon the attendance of local pupils. Those parents of children entitled to secondary education who signed the petition for the establishment of a local district high school will, naturally, honour the agreement, but there may be others who prefer the facilities offered by outside institutions. Cun these latter be induced to send their children to the local school ? Tf the lure of outside secondary schools proves too attractive it is a foregone conclusion that our district high school will have a short life. Its permanency will depend entirely upon local attendance and loyal support.
