“IIEWI’S LAST STAND”
AT ROYAL ON WEDNESDAY 7 .
On February 29th, 1864, there was fought a battle at Kilii Kihi, which is often described as the greatest Forlorn Hope Battle in the History of the world. Wherein 300 poorlycquiped Maori men, women and children, without water and with very little food, kept at bay a British army of some 1,800, assisted by artillery and cavalry, for a period of three days, and when, finally, the British general, moved by their wonderful courage, offered them freedom if they would surrender, Rewi, their principal chief, sent reply:—“Friends! I shall fight against you for ever! for ever!”
Wlmt you will see —Life in the Sixties, sweethearts, the fight in the Papakura Inn, Sir George Grey saves the honour of England, Von Tempsky, the master swordsman, the farewell ball to the British regiments, camp life at Burt’s farm, Von Tempsky’s spying expedition, posted a deserter, the Pakeha prisoner, a Maori maid’s love, the battle of Orakau, the last retreat, a stray shot, the grave in the bush, (lie breakneck ride for life to the safety of Te Awamutu camp, reunited-. Appropriate songs and dances will be rendered during the
evening. On Friday “After the Ball,” wi be screened.
“CONTRABAND.’
“Contraband” heading the programme at the Town Hall Cabaret to-morrow evening is a story of smugglers, romance, thrills, and filled with touches of delightful comedy. It is the story of a girl who tried to run a town and nearly got run out of it. But since it was nearly, that is the way the thrills crept in and you have one of the greatest pictures you have ever seen. In the cast are many wellknown players including Louis Wilson, Noah Beery and Raymond McKee. Other films are “Helping Hand” comedy, “Larissa,” (scenic) and News. Cabaret prices.
The popular Buck Jones will he hack at the Town Hall on Saturday in a big drama of the Texas Border, “The Trail Rider.” In this latest feature Buck gives a great display of buekjump riding. I’eter B. Kyne’s “Harbour Bar” which has been adapted to the screen as “Loving Lies” will he screened early next week.
