TRAIN CRASHES INTO CAR.

PETONE RESIDENT KILLED. A level crossing accident which was attended by fatal results, occurred at Fitzherbert street crossing, Featherston, when Mr. Kevin L. Mathews, of Bay road, Petone, was killed. .

Mr. K. W. Matthews, builder, of Masterton, was motoring from Wellington to Masterton, and had his nephew, K. W. Matthews, beside him. The warning bells were ringing as the car approached the crossing, signalling the approach of the 1.30 southward express from Woodville, but the driver of the car was somewhat deaf, and apparently did not hear, nor did either perceive the train's approach. The engine struck the car with terrific force, and the younger Matthews was killed outright, while the elder man was sent to the hospital suffering concussion, a broken arm, and shock.
